Balancing Consumer Privacy Protection and Artificial Intelligence Performance

Julien Cloarec,  Assistant Professor of Quantitative Marketing at iaelyon School of Management, Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, Magellan

Abstract:

There is a global tension between data protection and innovation for companies around the world: the more data that is available, the better the artificial intelligence (AI) systems become for companies that use that data to train them. However, little is known about how consumer privacy affects the use of AI for data collection in marketing. In response to recent calls for research on this topic and in recognition of the understudied consumer side of privacy, my approach to reducing the tension between consumer privacy and artificial intelligence performance will be to demonstrate that this problem can be solved by involving consumers in the design of their experience with AI, particularly through their preferences for data collection.
